Stutson, Caroline. Pirate Pup. Illus. Robert Rayevsky. San Francisco , Ca: Chronicle Books, 2005. ISBN 0-8118-4239-8

Caroline Stutson's canine Boston sailors and their pirate leader, Captain Pup, have the map to a buried treasure on Grenada , but they're unaware that cats inhabit the northern part of the island. A monumental battle ensues, but the fighting ends rather quickly when the cats open the pirates' treasure chest to find it filled with bones, not gold. Triumphantly, the dog crew returns to Boston with their treasure. Stutson uses verse reminiscent of a sea chantey, and the writing lends itself to reading aloud. Children in grades K through 2 nd would enjoy hearing it.
Robert Rayevsky uses watercolor and colored pencils and dips his pictures in coffee to give them an antique look. His artwork beautifully complements the Stutson's tale-a wonderful book.

Toni Rowden, January 2006
