Souza. D.M. Look What Mouths Can Do. Minneapolis: Lerner, 2007. ISBN 0-7613-9462-1. Ages 7-9.48 pp.

A fascinating book by an author of many successful non-fiction tomes. The first fact established is that mouths do a lot more than just chew food, although the first two photos of a great white shark’s and a tiger’s teeth certainly make one think of oneself as prey. The book is well designed, with photos of the creature being discussed on the left page and two or three paragraphs of information on the opposite page. The facts Souza chooses to present are engrossing and presented very clearly for the 7-9 year-old reader. Among the intriguing animals and mouth-actions discussed are the archerfish and the stream of saliva it spits out to catch spiders, the paper wasp queen and the nest she builds by semi-digesting wood, prairie dogs which seemingly kiss to identify each other, and the hunting-device tongues of chameleons and anteaters. A very interesting book!

A. Allison, June 2007
