Rasmussen, R. Kent. Mark Twain for Kids: His Life and Times. Chicago : Chicago Review Press, 2004. ISBN 1-55652-527-3. $14.95. 146 pp. Soft-cover.

Comprehensive and well-written, Mark Twain for Kids is a rich resource about Twain himself, his family, and, of course, his books. Rasmussen educates and entertains, frequently quoting the master, and emphasizes Clemens' early years. Clemens' youth was remarkable and, because of age identification, of special interest to its intended readers. Indeed, Twain's whole life is quite a story. I was delighted to see pictures of Clemens as a young man; we're so used to the older, famous white-haired guy with the mustache. The book uses varied graphics, many contemporary to Twain's times; these enrich the reading experience. Even for someone familiar with Twain, this book is a prize reference.

The layout is very well done. Activities are superb-topical and hands-on; this is a genuine bonus for teachers, homeschoolers, or adults involved with their children's learning. I suggest again, as above, to the publisher, a stronger cover stock next time.

A. Allison, June 2006
