Lerner Publishing’s Myth and Legend series:

Limke, Jeff and David Witt (Illus.). Isis and Osiris: to the Ends of the Earth. Minneapolis: Lerner, 2006. ISBN0-8225-3086-4. $26.60 (Library reinforced binding)

The graphic novel format works very dramatically in this version of the ancient Egyptian tale of the couple Isis and Osiris, great gods of Egypt. The story itself is a carefully watered down version that excludes some of the grimmer material, but nonetheless captures the ferocity of the rivalry between Osiris and his brother Set. And fierce and nasty the story is. Osiris is tricked and murdered by Set and Isis has to reconstitute Osiris’ body; actually, she brings him back to life more than once, and her own faithfulness and travail are key components of the myth.

The art is, fittingly, larger than life, with scenes of fire and mummies being unwrapped. The illustrations are sometimes unaccompanied by text, as when Osiris comes back to life after being mummified—that’s the art of the graphic novel: sometimes it functions without words.

Limke and Witt have done an excellent job of retelling one of the ancient world’s most influential stories—for older readers. This isn’t a picturebook for toddlers.

A. Allison, June 2007

The books below in Lerner’s new series are all in the same style and are all equally vivid and likely to catch the eye and imagination of their readers, perhaps bringing them to longer versions of the stories:

  • Limke, Jeff and Thomas Yeates (Illus.). King Arthur: Excalibur Unsheathed. Minneapolis: Lerner, 2007. ISBN 0-8225-3083-X. Ages 9-12. Grades 4-8.

  • Limke, Jeff and Ron Randall (Illus.). Thor and Loki in the Land of Giants. Minneapolis: Lerner, 2007. ISBN 0-8225-3087-2. Ages 9-12. Grades 4-8.
