Gibbons, Gail. Dinosaur Discoveries. New York: Holiday House, Inc., 2005. ISBN 0-8234-1971-1

Gail Gibbons' book will provide dinosaur-lovers with greater understanding of these creatures and their times. I'm myself drawn to a picture book with such an admirable dedication as "To young paleontologists past, present, and future." In this well laid-out book, each new fact, theory, word, period, dinosaur, or fossil is familiarized through spelling, pronunciation, and definition. A trove of information-- yet it never overpowers the readers as do some scientific children's books. Gibbon uses watercolors to create lively, colorful illustrations, ranging from the detailed depictions of fifty-eight dinosaurs to almost cartoonish paleontologists. While the publisher recommends ages four to eight, I think the ages should include older children. Gibbon gives readers much to consider.
