Gelber, Lisa and Jody Roberts. P Is for Peanut: A Photographic ABC. Los Angeles: Getty Publications, 2007. ISBN 978-0-89236-5 (hardcover). www.getty.edu

Gelber and Roberts teach art to children; here they’ve taken their experience and put together an alphabet book that will appeal to youngsters, their parents, and their teachers. Using a photograph from the Getty Collection to exemplify each letter, their crisp black-and-white selections of famous, startling photos are paired with bold layouts to create a unique alphabet book. From Abe Lincoln standing on a battlefield to a Kooky dancer in the 1920s to the snoozzzzzing hippopotamus, each page is a visual and imaginative delight and springboard for appreciation and enjoyment. Several pages at the end explain the history of the photos and identify the photographer.

A. Allison, June 2007
