Bell, Cece.   Sock Monkey goes to Hollywood. Illus. Cece Bell. Cambridge: Candlewick Press, 2003. $13.99. ISBN 076361962-0. 30 pp.

This is a picture book meant to teach children the importance of taking a bath. It also relays the message that baths can be fun and that a clean child is more appealing to the general public. Sock Monkey is toy that is an actor. He has never taken a bath and is very dirty. He receives an invitation to the Oswald Awards and has been nominated as Best Supporting Toy. The one exception is that all nominees must be clean. So Sock Monkey's truest friends agree to help him take a bath by taking him all over the world to wash, rinse and dry. He does not win the award he hoped for, but celebrates for the toy who won, realizing that he is clean and happy. A surprise ending happens with Sock Monkey winning the Ichabod Thalburg Award for Cleanest Nominee!
