Azarian, Mary. A Gardener's Alphabet. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 2000. ISBN 0-618-03380-7. $16

Mary Azarian is a Caldecott winning author/illustrator who, as her introduction states, has a lifelong love of gardens. The love shows, as well as the artistry. This book is a feast for the eyes; its paintings have a stained glass feel to them, so clear and rich are the colors. Eye-interest is extraordinary, as each painting offers so much to see, so much detail and variety. Azarian chooses her alphabet cleverly and widely-Compost and Manure are items, as well as Insects, Ornamental garden, and Japanese garden; verbs too: Dig, Prune, Harvest. This is an outstanding book.
