Arnold, Katya (reteller and illustrator). Baba Yaga: A Russian Folktale. New York. North-South Books, 1993. ISBN 1-55858-593-1 (paperback). $ 5.95.

The Russian-born Katya Arnold illustrates the Russian version of Tom Thumb in the style of the traditional Russian folk woodcuts, "lubok." I am not particularly fond of this style, but it certainly conveys the specifically Russian flavor of the story. The retelling, based on the tale in Alexander Afanas'ev's collection, is somewhat flat. Remembering the colorful language of the original, I cannot but regret how much has been lost.
