Alda, Arlene. Did You Say Pears? Toronto : Tundra, 2006. ISBN 0887767397. $16.95. 32 pp.

Arlene Alda is a photographic artist whose many brilliant picture books present concepts in a most imaginative way. Here she presents the concept of homonyms in a graphic game of hypothetical switches in the meaning of words that sound alike, and she uses photographs to express the double definitions. The juxtapositions are delightful, as in "{If}.a trunk" (photo of a tree) "were a nose" (photo of an elephant). Figuring out the pattern Alda is using is part of the fun, and her photographs are crisp, colorful, and creative (love the one of the sky--).

A. Allison, March 2006
