Ziefert, Harriet. A Dozen Ducklings Lost and Found. Boston: Houghton Mifflin
Company, 2003. $15.00 ISBN 0-618-14175-8
Mother Duck is proud of her new brood of twelve and wants to show them off. But she loses eight ducklings along the way to Farmer Donald's house. Soon, Farmer Donald and his dog come to her aid and help to find the babies. Finally, all dozen ducklings are safely together quacking and swimming in the pond with Mother. This story is an example of the monomyth "home-away-home": the ducklings begin in their nest, some are lost along the journey, and all are safely home at the end. It is also an excellent book to teach the concept of "one dozen." The author lists interesting facts about ducks at the end of the story including information about eggs-laying, nesting, and raising hatchlings. Donald Dreifuss's painted illustrations are alive with daring brushstrokes and depict the lush greenery and bold color of Farmer Donald's pastures.
