Wright, Randall. A Hundred Days from Home. New York: Henry Holt, 2002. ISBN 0-8050-6885-6. PZ7.W95827 Hu . Hard back, pp 154.

This is Randall Wright's first novel, about a young protagonist, Elam, his double loss, guilt and anger. In the scorched canyons of Arizona, a lonely boy from the mountains feels out of place and finds respite from his sorrow of losing a best friend when he discovers a mysterious creek where none should exist, saves a pine sapling, and forges a forbidden friendship with a Mexican boy. Just as things appear to improve, Elam looses his father in an accident at the smelter and must face his mother's grief-stricken rage. But, as Elam lies in bed, the desert hillsides fill with the mournful cries of the coyotes until Elam realizes that someday he and his mom will feel better.
