Updike, John. A Child's Calendar. New York: Holiday House, 1999. $16.95. ISBN 0-8234-1445-0

A Child's Calendar is a book of 12 poems, one for each month. The poems follow a family through the different seasons. Verses examine changes in the natural world in a child-centered way. The words Updike uses are vibrant but simple.
The illustrations are by Trina Schart Hyman. Each poem has an illustrated bar next to it and another illustration on the opposite page. Hyman uses paintings that are colorful, detailed and dynamic.

This book won the Caldecott award in 2002. Updike has written award winning short stories, poems and criticism. Hyman has illustrated over 100 books and has won many awards.

Highly recommended for 4-8 year olds
