Sullivan, Edward T. Reaching Reluctant Young Adult Readers: A Handbook for Librarians and Teachers. Lanham, MD: Scarecrow, 2002. $24.50. ISBN 0-8108-4343-9.

A guide for combating "aliteracy," Reaching Reluctant Young adult Readers begins in the opening chapters by defining "aliteracy" and identifying reluctant readers that can still be saved. The author then proceeds to offer strategies teachers and librarians can use to encourage reading among alliterate young adults. The remaining six chapters concentrate on the literacy categories of fiction, comics and graphic novels, nonfiction, picture books, magazines, and audio books. Misconceptions educators may about the quality or the appropriateness of the materials are addressed, as well as the teen appeal of these sources posses. Tips for using these materials are provided in each chapter as well as lists of recommended materials and sources for further information. The book ends with an appendix of professional resources to aid educators in the fight against those who can read but choose not to.

Very user-friendly, the guide is easy to navigate. Chapter titles and headings allow the reader to find information and resources quickly. Although the guide offers extensive information on each medium, the author does not suggest which work best. By doing this, the author allows the reader to decide which medium will work most effectively for a particular student.
