Scillian, David. P Is for Passport: A World Alphabet. Illus. various Sleeping Bear artists in various media. Chelsea, MI: Sleeping Bear Press, 2002. $19.95. ISBN 1-58536-157-7.

This is a fine book, one definitely to purchase. It’s intelligently conceived; it’s not only a book of places but more—it’s a book about traveling, the excitement of it, and the similarity of human activity around the world—for example K is for Knapsack and the B verse is organized around the varieties of Bread. Excellent poetry—each letter’s verse is read-out-loud-able and very witty. Prose is nicely laid out on the border, presenting well-selected facts.

The art is remarkable; many artists contributed. Each does an imaginative job so it’s hard to comment on the particular, except to say each individual page is worth savor for its own attributes: really, it’s a remarkable book.

Highly recommended
