Ride, Sally and Tom O'Shaughnessy. Exploring Our Solar System. NY: Crown, 2003. $19.99. ISBN 0-375-81204-0.

From its Preface to its last pages, this is a very well written book, a model of clear exposition and pleasing prose that excites the mind and spirit. I remember books I read about the solar system back in the 1950s, and, my, has the solar system changed! And so have the illustrations; the graphics are gorgeous, clear and crisp, and very informative. Plus Sally Ride is truly an inspiring person, a PhD in Physics from Stanford; in the 1980s, she made two extended trips into space, the first American woman to do so. She is a professor now at UCSD; this is her fourth science book for children. Tom O'Shaughnessy has collaborated on all of them. Their work is very fine; this is a book a science-minded older child would treasure.
