Regan, Lara Jo. What Is Mr. Winkle? New York: Random House, 2001. $14.95. ISBN 0-375-81554-6.

Little kids will love this book and so will the adults reading and looking at the photographs with them. Ms. Regan is a well-known photographer who owns "the cutest dog in the world," Mr. Winkle. He is a cute little guy who becomes both cute and funny when his owner dresses him up in various costumes and poses him in front of little scenes. There is, for example, Mr. Winkle as a hungry lion, his paws resting on a stuffed zebra; a topiary, a dashboard ornament. Tremendous enjoyment of Ms. Regan's imagination and originality and of her obviously very patient pooch are certain.

Highly recommended
