Morrison, Toni. Remember The Journey to School Integration. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 2004. $18.00. ISBN 0-618-39740-X. 78pp.

An excellent history book for children as well as adults, this is a pictorial account of the early efforts to integrate the public school system nationwide. Toni Morrison uses actual photos of the desegregation period but with each she provides her own fictional text to allow the reader to see what may have been thought in people’s minds. She depicts both good and bad situations in sparse prose, since the pictures display the emotions of both the Blacks and Whites.

The cover jacket of the book shows two girls in a classroom looking apprehensively at each other. One is Black and the other is White. This exhibits how children felt. The adage “a picture is worth a thousand words” is definitely proven true in this book.
