Loreen Leedy. Mapping Penny's World.New York: Henry Holt, 2000. ISBN 0-8050-6178-9. $17.
Leedy's book accompanies her Measuring Penny, Penny being the first-person narrator's Boston terrier. Both books are imaginative and educational. This one presents map-making as public-a class makes a map of its school, learning Scale, Symbol, Key, etc.-and also personal-the child maps her bedroom, the backyard where Penny hides her treasures, the route through the neighborhood Penny's dog pal Maxine takes to visit, the family's hiking trails, and finally, all the places in the world the child wants to visit-accompanied, of course, by Penny.
The book shows the applicability and enjoyment of subjects learned in school, and all the maps are easy for kids to emulate.
