Holeman, Linda. Search of the Moon King's Daughter. Tundra, 2003. $8. 0887766099.

Set in early 1800s Industrial England, Linda Holeman's Search of the Moon King's Daughter is a poignant story of love. After an opiate-addicted and invalid mother sells her five-year old son into servitude as a chimney sweep in order to acquire more laudanum, Emmaline, the boy's teenage sister, travels to London to rescue her brother. During her search, Emmaline encounters wrenching hunger, a lecherous master and two loyal friends, with their own stories, secrets and heartbreaks. The novel approaches topics of poverty, child labor, unwanted pregnancies, drug dependency and family conflict. It is a somber read, equally full of poetry, charming imagery and distressing descriptions of life experienced by the working classes during the era of the Industrial Revolution.
