Dooley, Norah. Everybody Cooks Rice. Illus. Peter J. Thornton. Minneapolis : Carolrhoda, 1991. ISBN 0-87614-412-1. $15.95

Put in the framework of a girl canvassing her neighborhood to find her brother in time for dinner again , this tour of friendly families' houses on Carrie's block is a moveable feast. At each house, she has bites of whatever rice dish the family is cooking up, and the variety is impressive: Puerto Rican, Indian, Chinese, Vietnamese, Barbadan, and the recipes are included, too. The colorful illustrations emphasize kitchens and dining rooms, family and friends, and wonderful food.

Featuring rice, this book is in a series by Carolrhoda; it includes Everyone Bakes Bread, Everyone Brings Noodles, and Everyone Serves Soup , making an attractive and useful set.

A. Allison, June 2006
