Daly, Maureen. Seventeenth Summer. New York: Simon & Schuster, 2002. ISBN: 0-689-85383-1. Hardback. 311 pages. $17.95.

Maureen Daly's vision of first love tells about an unforgettable Seventeenth Summer between high school graduation and commencement of college when a reticent Angie Morrow, who never really dated, meets a charming Jack Duluth, the star of the basketball team, and falls in love. As the ephemeral summer ripens, Angie matures and her feelings for Jack grow fuller. The author's graceful language beautifully paints the innocence of a first relationship in the 1940s Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. Daly accurately narrates every shiver and warmth of a new love as Angie discerns her feelings for Jack while quietly examining her older sisters' romances and prepares to leave home.
