Burnard, Damon. Pork and Beef's Great Adventure. Houghton Mifflin, 1998. $15.00. ISBN 0-3958-6765-7.

Beginning in the spirit of the American tall tale, this kindly, whimsical story concerns two childlike animal characters, Pork and Beef. In a time of drought, everyone languishes except our main characters, who relax and enjoy fun pursuits. In this adventure they fly to the moon in feathers stuck on with frosting, and unlike Icarus, when the sun comes out and they fall, bird friends catch them and set them gently on earth. Burnard, whose story is"dedicated to the inventor of string," is a genuine humorist.

Recommended reading level: Age 6-8
