Bradbury, Ray. Ill. By Leo and Diane Dillon. Switch On The Night. New York: Knopf, 2000 (repr.). $ 14.95. ISBN 0-375-80608-3
Ray Bradbury's only story for children was first published in 1955, and in 1993 it was re-issued with illustrations by the twice Caldecott-winning team Leo and Diane Dillon.
The story of the boy who is afraid of dark may seem hopelessly banal in plot summary, but it is the poetic language, unmistakably Bradbury's, that gives the book its charm. The artwork is remarkable and will appeal to children as well as adults. The illustrators have dedicated their work to M. C. Escher, and it is easy to recognize the master's influence in the pictures with their distorted perspective and "impossible space."
A wonderful book to enjoy far beyond bedtime reading.
