Bosveld, Jane. illustrated by Daniel O'Leary. While A Tree Was Growing. Workman Publishing Co., Inc., 1998. $14.95. ISBN 0-7611-0540-9.

This is a fascinating book about the giant sequoia, a variety of tree that grows in the California's Sierra Nevada mountains. They are the largest trees in the world, are among the oldest living things on our planet. Not only does Jane Bosveld reveal facts about these mammoth trees, but goes farther by describing the environment and animal life which surrounds the trees and she even discusses important events which have taken place in history during the life of these trees. Daniel O'Leary's illustrations are great, adding a nice dimension to this book. This book should provide an interesting learning experience for its young readers.

Recommended reading level: Age 4-8
